Soccer Will Play Texas Tech In First Round of NCAA Tournament

DENTON - The North Texas soccer team will play Texas Tech on Friday in Lubbock at 7 the first round of the NCAA Championship, the NCAA announced Monday with the release of the 64-team bracket.

The Mean Green and the Red Raiders were among 31 teams to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championship after winning their conference tournaments. North Texas (19-3-1) won both the Conference USA regular-season and conference championship titles. Texas Tech (13-3-5) won the Big 12 title with a 1-0 victory against Kansas.

The winner of Friday night's contest would play either Southeastern La. or fourth-seeded Auburn in the second round.

This is the Mean Green's fourth trip to the NCAA tournament. NT lost to Texas Tech, 2-0, in its last NCAA appearance in 2012. North Texas has won its last three games and 11 of its last 12 matches. The Mean Green's 19 wins sets a school record and is the most wins by any squad in the 64-team NCAA bracket.

Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Year Rachel Holden leads the Mean Green offense with 12 goals. She is followed by Karla Pineda, the C-USA Midfielder of the Year, who has posted seven goals and dished out eight assists. First-team all-conference goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine anchors the defense with 15 shutouts.

The North Texas squad gathered in the HUB Club in Apogee Stadium and watched the unveiling of the bracket along with family and friends.
