MOBILE, Ala. (11/7/07) Senior Heather Hutyra wasn’t about to let her career end quite yet. Three goals in 10 minutes fueled the North Texas women’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round of the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship.
Hutyra scored two of the three goals in the second half to send the Mean Green (14-7) to the semifinals tomorrow night where they will meet the winner of the Western Kentucky-South Alabama matchup.
Louisiana-Lafayette (9-8-4) jumped on North Texas early as Courtney Hofland scored in the 20th minute to give the Cajuns the 1-0 lead. The Mean Green continued to apply the pressure however and Hutyra was the one to get North Texas going offensively.
She first tied the score up at 1-1 in 68th minute off a feed from freshman Janaye Woods. Two minutes later it was Hutyra once again as she put in a rebound off a shot from Amanda Mitchell. North Texas put the game away for good in the 78th minute of play when Veronica Ayala headed in her sixth goal of the year off a corner kick from Kendall Juett.
North Texas outshot the Cajuns 16-4 as freshman goalkeeper Amanda Hall made one save to pick up the win.
The Mean Green has knockedthe Ragin Cajuns out in three straight years in the opening round and move to 12-0 all-time against Louisiana-Lafayette.
North Texas plays its semifinal game tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
