BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (11/7/03)- The North Texas women's soccer team will play in the Sun Belt Conference Championship game for the fourth consecutive year thanks to a 4-0 victory over Middle Tennessee in the semifinals. North Texas (15-5-1) will face top-seeded Denver in the championship match. The Pioneers defeated No. 4 Western Kentucky 1-0 in Friday’s first semifinal match. This will be the third straight year North Texas and Denver have met in the finals, with the Pioneers coming away victorious in the first two championship meetings.
“I’m proud of our girls. They followed our game plan to keep possession of the ball. ” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “This was a total team effort and we look forward to playing in the finals.”
The Mean Green got a quick goal in the ninth minute of play when Angela Hawkins took a pass from Marilyn Marin right in front of the goal and fired it past Blue Raider goalkeeper Danielle Perreault for a 1-0 North Texas lead.
North Texas added an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Melinda Pina took a pass from Jessica Koschmann and Elaine Bacchus, then drove past Perreault for a 2-0 Mean Green advantage. North Texas added its third goal five minutes later when Marin assisted on her second score of the night, this time finding Danielle Smith to make it 3-0. Marin ended the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 85th minute, her 23rd of the season.
The Mean Green are going after their first tournament championship and first-ever NCAA tournament bid with a win over Denver. North Texas defeated the Pioneers in the only match-up between the two teams earlier in the season 3-2 in double overtime.
The finals of the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament will take place at 1 p.m. (CST) on Saturday at the WKU Soccer Field on the Western Kentucky University campus.
