GK Riley Named First-Team C-USA All-Academic Squad
Standout Keeper Leading Mean Green Into C-USA Tournament
DENTON, Texas – After a stellar year both on off the field and in the classroom, North Texas goalkeeper Haley Riley earned Conference USA First-Team All-Academic honors on Tuesday.
This is just the latest academic award for the sophomore, who was named to the Dean’s List in the fall 2012 and the President’s List/4.0 Honor Roll in the spring of 2013. Riley is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Rehabilitation Studies, and owns a 3.931 GPA at North Texas.
Even though this is only her sophomore year, she’s already earned 74 hours of college credit.
“It’s always nice to see players be productive on the field and in the classroom as well,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “Haley has done both this year, and I’m very proud of her accomplishments this season.”
On the field, Riley’s story is nothing short of remarkable. Thrust into starting role after an injury to standout goalie, Jackie Kerestine, Riley responded by not allowing a goal for over four games. She was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9, and ranks eighth in the league with a 1.10 goals against average.
She will have a heavy charge this week at the C-USA Tournament. North Texas hasn’t allowed a goal in conference tournament play since 2010 – a streak of five straight games. Riley and the Mean Green open the tournament on Wednesday afternoon against the East No. 3 seed, FIU, who NT faced in the Sun Belt Tournament final in 2012.
