Mean Green Soccer Plays In C-USA Semifinals
North Texas Faces No. 4 Florida Atlantic On Friday
CHARLOTTE - The North Texas soccer team will play in its fourth straight Conference USA semifinal match on Friday afternoon against fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic at 3:30 p.m., central time. The top-seeded Mean Green are the defending conference tournament champions.
The Mean Green advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 overtime win against Old Dominion. Anna Flobeck and Rachel Holden scored the goals for the Mean Green. North Texas advanced to the semifinals of the C-USA Championship for the fourth straight year. NT is 3-0 in those games.
The Mean Green and FAU did not face each other in the regular season. North Texas holds a 9-1 series advantage, including a 2-1 win last year at home.
The Mean Green is riding a six-game winning streak, a season high. Last year’s team had a winning streak of eight games.
With the game-winning goal against ODU, Rachel Holden moved into a tie for sixth place in the North Texas record books with 38 goals. She is also now in ninth place in career points with 86 and is tied for second in game-winning goals with 16. In the conference this season, she is tied for first in goals, tied for second in points and tied for eighth in assists with four.
Hailey Sutton dished out the assist on the game-winning goal vs. ODU with a chip into the box. It was her first career assist at North Texas. She now has posted 11 points, good for fourth on the team.
Three freshmen started the game against Old Dominion: Dominique James, Miranda Schoening and Madeline Guderian. James broke into the starting lineup seven games into the season at outside back. She played central defense for the first time against ODU.
Guderian started her first career game against ODU in place of junior Tori Phillips, who was suspended for the game. Guderian has played in 19 of 20 games for the Mean Green this season.
Schoening improved to 8-1 in goal for the Mean Green. She started her first game against WKU after starter Brooke Bradley went down with an injury. She has posted eight wins, three shutouts and was named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 23.
North Texas improved to 15-4-1 overall with the win against ODU. The Mean Green soccer program has won at least 15 games in a single season the last three years and four of the last five years.
