Three Soccer Players Honored By Conference USA

Jackie Kerestine leads the conference with 12 shutouts

DENTON – Three North Texas players were recognized by Conference USA for their performances this season as they led the Mean Green soccer team to the league regular-season title.

Junior midfielder Karla Pineda and sophomore forward Rachel Holden were named first-team all-conference, while junior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine received second-team honors.

Pineda had a standout junior campaign, scoring 11 goals and dishing out seven assists. As the team’s free-kick specialist, she recorded eight tallies and set up three goals from set pieces. She was among the conference’s leaders in goals (tied for second), assists (tied for third), and points (second). She is the only C-USA player to be named offensive player of the week twice this season.

Pineda’s play was especially strong during the conference season when seven of her 11 goals were scored against C-USA foes. She scored game-winning goals against UTEP and FIU with penalty kicks. The junior posted multi-goal games against Charlotte and Old Dominion and recorded 12 total points in the three games against FIU, Charlotte and Old Dominion.

Holden, the C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, was named to the first team for the second straight season. She scored four goals, including two against conference opponents, despite drawing a lot of attention and double teams in 2014 after a stellar freshman campaign. She finished tied for third on the team with nine points. She opening the season by being named C-USA Offensive Player of the Year after scoring two game-winning goals in the opening two games.

Kerestine was named to the second team after leading C-USA in shutouts (12), goals against average (0.51) and save percentage (.894). She was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week four times this season, and is the only player to receive weekly recognition from the conference more than two times.

The junior goalkeeper came back from a knee injury in 2013 to record 12 shutouts in the Mean Green’s 14 wins this season. She recorded shutouts in seven conference victories and gave up just four goals in the 10 league games. Kerestine capped the regular season with three straight shutout victories. In the 1-1 tie with Rice, she set a career high with 11 saves.

Kerestine also set multiple records during her junior campaign, breaking Mean Green career marks in shutouts, saves and wins. She also set the single-season record for shutouts. Nationally, she is ranked in GAA (13th) and save percentage (7th).

North Texas earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament and plays No. 8 Marshall on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 3:30 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C.

The all-conference teams are voted on by the league’s coaches.
