DENTON, Texas (11/03/09) - For a 10th straight season the North Texas soccer team will take aim at a conference championship by playing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, beginning tomorrow at 12 p.m. (CT) from Boca Raton, Florida against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
Under 15-year head coach John Hedlund, North Texas has compiled an all-time record of 19-7 at the Sun Belt Tournament, which includes two SBC Championships. Last season the Mean Green was eliminated in the semi-finals in a 1-0 loss to Western Kentucky.
The Mean Green (11-6-2, 7-2-2) enter the tournament as the fourth seed and will go up against an MTU team that they tied 0-0 in double overtime in Murfreesboro, Tennessee back on October 23. In that contest the North Texas defense was tremendous, allowing only eight shots in 110 minutes of action and junior goalkeeper Mandy Hall was flawless with six saves.
The Mean Green owns a 7-4-2 all-time series record against the Blue Raiders (12-5-2, 6-4-1).
North Texas hit a bit of a tough stretch to close the regular season, going 0-2-1 in games on the road against Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky and Denver. In those three games the Mean Green did not score a goal despite outshooting their opponents 38-32.
In their past game at Denver the Mean Green was without the services of both forward Michelle Young (concussion) and Hall (thumb). However, both players will be ready to go come tomorrow against the Blue Raiders.
