DENTON, Tex. (11/2/07) In the storied chapters of the North Texas-Denver rivalry overtime and one-goal games are featured prominently. Tonight’s game was no different however for the Mean Green they came out on the wrong side. Mariah Johnson scored four minutes into the first overtime frame to lift the Pioneers (10-4-4, 7-2-2) past North Texas 3-2 from the NT Soccer Field.
The game featured a flurry of late goals and lead changes but the loss sends the Mean Green to its fourth straight defeat for the first time in school history. North Texas enters the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed next week in Mobile, Ala.
The first half was scoreless but North Texas (13-6, 7-4) had its chances. Kendall Juett was stopped on a penalty kick in the 14th minute of play by Pioneer’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Synder. The Mean Green scored first in the second half as Janaye Woods made it 1-0 in the 55th minute of play on a breakaway.
Denver knotted the game up 20 minutes later when Lauren Cavarra scored off a loose ball in the Mean Green box. Denver took its first lead of the game eight minutes later when Jessie Rogers scored with a header off a free kick from Elise Mascitelli.
It didn’t take long though for the Mean Green to answer as 37 seconds later Veronica Ayala tied the game at 2-2 off a deflection.
In the waning seconds Juett had a chance to pull out a last second win for North Texas as he shot from 20 yards out hit the side of the Denver net with one second left in regulation.
In overtime Johnson got behind the North Texas defense on the right side and knocked it home from 20 yards out.
North Texas closes out its home season with a record of 8-1. The Mean Green plays its regular season finale on Sunday at metroplex rival SMU.
