MIAMI, Fla. (11/2/03)- The North Texas (13-5-1, 6-1-1) women’s soccer team wrapped up the second seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Florida International (2-13-2, 1-7) in Miami.
Junior forward Melinda Pina scored the game-winning goal with 20 minutes remaining in the match to power the Mean Green to the victory. The goal was Pina’s 19th of the season as she was assisted by forward Marilyn Marin and midfielder Caree Ridenour from eight yards out in front of the box.
North Texas opened the scoring when Marin scored her 19th goal of the season as she beat Golden Panther goalkeeper Juliana Gomez on a one-one-one play to give the Mean Green the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
FIU tied to game up at 1-1 in the 50th minute of action when Kristy Caunter scored on a loose ball in front of the North Texas net. The Mean Green retook the lead for good on Pina’s goal and goalkeeper Briana Buchanan came up with four saves to collect her 13th win of the season
The win by North Texas extends their winning streak to three games and completes the regular season with at least 13 wins for the seventh consecutive year.
North Texas will enter the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the second seed and will face the seventh seed Arkansas State in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday November 5 in Bowling Green, Ky. The Mean Green defeated the Indians earlier in the season 6-1 and has never lost to Arkansas State in their history.
