Rachel Holden, Marchelle Davis And Carissa Sanders Receive Honors
IRVING – North Texas, which captured its third-straight Conference USA regular-season championship last weekend, placed three players on the C-USA all-conference list as voted by the league coaches, the conference announced Tuesday.
Senior forward Rachel Holden and senior midfielder Marchelle Davis were named second team, and sophomore defender Carissa Sanders was selected third team.
Holden was named all-conference second team after being named first team the last three years. Davis and Sanders earned their first all-conference honors.
Holden continued to be a scoring threat during her senior campaign. She is first on the team with nine goals and second with 23 points. In the conference, she is tied for second in goals, fourth in points and tied for eighth in assists with four. She was named C-USA's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept 19 after scoring both goals in the come-from-behind win against Rice. She registered at least a point in five of the nine conference games she played in.
Davis is capping her career with a banner year. She has been named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week the last two weeks after scoring game-winning goals in three of the last four games. In the final regular-season game against Louisiana Tech, she played a role in all three of the Mean Green goals, converting a penalty kick and dishing out two assists. She has recorded nine points in the last four conference games.
Davis has posted career highs in goals (8), assists (7) and points (23). The point and assists lead the team. She is tied for second in the conference in assists and is third in points. She has posted at least one point in seven of 10 conference games.
Sanders has played in the defense for the Mean Green the last two years but made the move to the central defense this season. She has played every minute in conference play except for nine minutes. She is part of a defensive unit that has recorded seven shutouts, including three in conference play. Sanders and the Mean Green defense have held C-USA opponents to 5 shots on goal or less in seven of 10 games. The defense has held conference opponents to 1 goal or less in seven of 10 games.
The top-seeded Mean Green play No. 8 Old Dominion in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m., central time, in Charlotte, N.C.
