LAFAYETTE, La. (11/1/06) Heather Hutyra and Kendall Juett showed why they were chosen the Sun Belt Conference first-team. The duo powered the North Texas women’s soccer team past Louisiana-Lafayette in the first-round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament 5-1.
The win sends the Mean Green (14-4-2) into the semifinals where they will face Middle Tennessee tomorrow at 7 p.m.
North Texas started the scoring off first as Hutyra notched her 13th goal of the season in the 9th minute of play to make it 1-0. Louisiana-Lafayette (8-8-4) knotted the game up at 1-1 just four minutes later with a goal from Taunya Geelhoed.
Juett’s 11th goal of the season in the 30th minute of play regained the lead for North Texas at 2-1.
The second half was total domination for the Mean Green. North Texas scored three goals in a span of 19 minutes to take control of the game.
Sophomore Brittany Cleveland made it 3-1 in the 51st minute of play off a loose ball in the box. Senior Kristen Campbell, who had three points on the night, scored off a corner kick in the 54th minute extending the lead to 4-1.
Juett’s 12th goal of the year and second of the night came in the 70th minute of play to cap the night of scoring off for the Mean Green.
Goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made four saves on the night to pick up the win.
The win is the seventh straight for North Texas in SBC Tournament play and the seventh straight time that the Mean Green has advanced to the semifinals.
