DENTON, Texas - Mean Green soccer head coach John Hedlund was named coach of the year by College Sports Madness in their Sun Belt All-Conference selections Tuesday morning.
Coach Hedlund has amassed 247 wins in his career with North Texas, a program he built from the ground up starting in 1995. He has been awarded Sun Belt Conference coach of the year three times (2004, 2005, 2011) and has delivered seven championships to the program.
College Sports Madness also named junior defender Kelsey Hodges as the defensive player of the year. Hodges anchored a punishing defense throughout the 2012 campaign for the Mean Green and has established herself as a deadly scoring threat with seven goals on the season despite her defensive position.
Hodges, senior forward Michelle Young, freshman midfielder Karla Pineda and freshman forward Amber Haggerty all made the College Sports Madness Sun Belt All-Conference team. Hodges, Young and Pineda were named first team, and Haggerty was named to the second team.
