MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (10/30/05) The North Texas women’s soccer team had their 15-game unbeaten streak come to an end as Middle Tennessee defeated the Mean Green 3-0 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The loss is the first for North Texas (13-3-2, 8-1) since August 27 and only the third of the season. North Texas had already clinched the regular season Sun Belt Conference Championship and the top seed in the upcoming tournament heading into the game.
"With the conference championship and the No. 1 seed already wrapped up, it was just hard to motivate my players for this game," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "The good thing is that I was able to play my entire rostrer and had no injuries heading into the conference tournament".
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half as the Blue Raiders out-shot the Mean Green 9-2 in the first half.
Middle Tennessee was able to break through three minutes into the second half as Holly Grogan beat Kandice Ellis on a one-on-one breakaway.
Rachel Holmes extended the Blue Raider lead in the 72nd minute of play to 2-0 on another breakaway. The Blue Raiders closed out the scoring with 13 seconds remaining in the game as Rebecca Rodriguez notched her 12th goal of the season.
Ellis made eight saves on the day for North Texas as Middle Tennessee out-shot the Mean Green 16-6 for the game.
North Texas will be the top seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament which begins on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Mobile, Ala.
The Mean Green are going after their second straight conference tournament title and NCAA tournament appearance.
