COLLEGE STATION, Tex (10/29/04) The North Texas women’s soccer team dropped its final non-conference game of the season to No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies 8-2 at the Aggie Soccer Complex.
North Texas (12-5-1, 5-1-1) played most of its starters in only half of the game in preparations for Sunday’s Sun Belt Conference finale against Florida International.
The Aggies jumped on the Mean Green early with a goal in the second minute of play to take an early 1-0 lead. Texas A&M extended its lead to 3-0 with goals in the 18th and 21st minute of the first half.
The Aggies closed out the first half with three more goals and led 6-0 at the break. North Texas came out in the second half and got on the board early as senior forward Melinda Pina scored her ninth goal of the season and 50th of her career in the 46th minute of play. Pina’s goal came off a rebound from a shot by freshman forward Heather Hutyra, who picked up her fifth assist of the season.
The Aggies scored two more goals in the second half before senior Elaine Bacchus scored her second goal of the season in the 58th minute of play.
North Texas returns home on Sunday with a showdown against Florida International. The Mean Green can clinch at least a share of the SBC crown with a win over FIU on Sunday. North Texas can claim its second Sun Belt Conference title outright by winning their final game on Sunday combined with a loss or tie by Middle Tennessee in their final game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
