DENTON (10/27/02) - Junior forward Marilyn Marin, who leads the nation in points, scored two goals and had two assists in the 4-2 Mean Green (12-4-1, 6-2) soccer win over Florida International. Marin's two goals also set the new school record for most goals in a single season as she now has 26 goals on the year. Marin's six points on the afternoon give her a nation leading 67 and extend her point streak to 14 consecutive games. The win for North Texas wraps up the second seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
"It was a good win for us, they have a physical team and it was a tough game," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We now have some momentum going into the Sun Belt Conference tournament".
North Texas opened up the scoring in the 21st minute when Marin ripped a laser past Golden Panther goalkeeper Adrienne McWilliams on a free kick to make it 1-0. The scored remained that way until FIU tied things up in the 49th minute on Janessa Taddei's goal on a free kick 15 yards out. However Marin answered with her second goal of the afternoon on a redirection off a corner kick from Melinda Pina in the 50th minute.
Jessica Hennessey scored in the 68th minute on a deflection off a Marin shot to extend the North Texas lead to 3-1. FIU closed the gap to just one when Taddei scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 82nd minute. The Mean Green were able to ice the game when Alyssa Carrier scored just one minute after the Golden Panthers cut the lead to one with a goal on a loose ball in the FIU box.
The win is the fourth in five games for North Texas and they remain unbeaten in five straight. The Mean Green will now gear up for the Sun Belt Conference tournament that will be held November 6-9 in Mobile, Alabama on the campus of South Alabama University at The Cage.
