Mean Green Move Into First Place After 1-0 Win Over South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (10/24/04) The North Texas women’s soccer team vaulted into first place atop the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 1-0 shutout victory over South Alabama on the road at The Cage.

North Texas is now 5-1-1 in SBC play and can clinch a share of the conference title with a win on Sunday at home against Florida International.

North Texas (12-4-1, 5-1-1) dominated play in the first half out shooting the Jaguars 13-2. Sophomore forward Kristen Campbell gave the Mean Green the early 1-0 edge with her fourth goal of the season in the 16th minute of play.

Campbell beat South Alabama (10-4-2, 2-2-2) goalkeeper Amber Angermeier with a header off a cross from freshman Dani Slavonic.

North Texas made the goal by Campbell stand up as junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made only one save but picked up her seventh shutout of the season.

The defense by North Texas was stifling throughout the game as South Alabama did not get a shot off in the second half of play.

The win by the Mean Green is the seventh on the road this year, which ties a school record.

North Texas can claim its second Sun Belt Conference title outright by winning their final game on Sunday combined with a loss or a tie by Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Lafayette.

The regular season finale for North Texas is against Florida International on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
