DENTON (10/22/06) In a back and forth battle the North Texas women’s soccer team had its 23-game home unbeaten streak snapped as Middle Tennessee escaped with a 3-2 from the North Texas Soccer Field. The loss ends the nine-game winning streak for North Texas and its 12-game unbeaten streak.
In a very evenly matched game, North Texas (13-3-2, 9-1) had a number of chances to strike early.
In the 7th minute of play freshman Kendall Juett ripped a shot just over the net keeping the game scoreless. Middle Tennessee (15-3, 9-1) scored the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute of play as Jennifer Threlkeld beat Kandice Ellis from the right side of the box to make it 1-0.
The Mean Green trailed 1-0 heading into the second half, but evened things up in the 54th minute of play. Juett slipped behind the Blue Raider defense and was fouled in the box setting up a penalty kick. Kelli Lunsford converted the penalty kick and tied the game up at 1-1.
Middle Tennessee responded with the next two goals, first in the 56th minute as Kala Morgan deflected a pass from Holly Grogan past Ellis. Grogan then scored to make it 3-1 in the 64th minute of play.
North Texas cut the Blue Raider lead to 3-2 when Juett got a pass from Lunsford and scored in the 78th minute of play on a breakaway.
The Mean Green had one last flurry in the final 12 minutes of play, but could not get the game-tying goal.
The loss at home is the first for North Texas since the 2004 season.
The Mean Green is back in action on Friday, October 27 in the regular season finale at Denver.
