LAFAYETTE, La. (10/22/04)- Senior forward Melinda Pina scored with five minutes remaining to propel the North Texas (11-4-1, 4-1-1) women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (7-6-2, 3-1-1) in a key Sun Belt Conference match-up.
The victory moves North Texas to 4-1-1 in conference play and one step closer to the Sun Belt crown. North Texas can clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference Championship with victories in their final two games.
“This was a big win for us. The girls were able to respond when we got down early and then Melinda came through for us with the big goal at the end,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.
Louisiana Lafayette jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Lotte Rasmussen scored in the 11th minute of play. North Texas responded three minutes later when senior defender Krista Georgas scored her first goal of the season and only the fourth of her career in the 14th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied heading into the break and for much of the second half until Pina’s game-winning goal.
Sophomore forward Jamie Yates setup Pina in the 85th minute of play off a quick pass that sent Pina through the Cajun’s defense and into the open as she beat goalkeeper Kristen Malen for her eighth goal of the season and a 2-1 Mean Green lead.
North Texas was able to hold off Louisiana-Lafayette as junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made two saves to pick up the win.
North Texas returns to action on the road Sunday afternoon with a showdown against South Alabama.
