DALLAS (10/22/03)- The North Texas (10-5-1, 3-1-1) women's soccer team lost their final non-conference game of the season to metroplex rival SMU (14-2) 4-1 at Westcott Field. The loss ends a three-game road trip for North Texas in which the Mean Green were 0-2-1.
SMU opened the scoring in the first half on a goal from Adria Campbell in the fourth minute of action on a rebound shot in the North Texas box. The Mean Green tied the match up at 1-1 in the 30th minute when freshman forward Melissa Chapman scored her third goal of the season. Chapman, who is now tied for third on the team in goals, was setup off a free kick from defender Caree Rideour who got the assist on the goal.
The match was tied at the half but the Mustangs were able to strike quickly in the second half with a goal two minutes in from Olivia O'Rear to make it 2-1 SMU. The Mustangs were able to pull away from North Texas late in the match with two goals in five minutes, the first in the 77th minute and the second in teh 82nd minute to give SMU a 4-1 lead.
North Texas forwards Marilyn Marin and Melinda Pina were both held scoreless for only the second time in a game this season. Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan faced 17 shots from SMU and made four saves on the night.
The Mean Green return home and into Sun Belt Conference play with a match Friday night against Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m.
