Radford Scores Game-Winning Goal In Soccer Victory

DENTON (10/20/06) - Senior Julie Radford scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to propel the North Texas soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Western Kentucky on Friday night at the North Texas Soccer Field.

The Mean Green (13-2-2, 9-0) extends its winning streak to nine games and is unbeaten in its last 12 games. North Texas is 2-1 at home against the Lady Toppers. North Texas and Denver both remain unbeaten in the Sun Belt Conference at 9-0.

North Texas scored back-to-back goals in the last six minutes of the game to pull out the victory. Western Kentucky held a 1-0 lead for most of the game until senior Tiffany Adams rifled in the tying goal at the 85th minute. Radford headed in the winning goal a minute later. Both goals came off set pieces.

"I am very proud of these girls because they showed a lot of determination," said head coach John Hedlund. "Give Western Kentucky credit. They kept us out of their goal for most of the game. We kept working and making adjustments. My players just didn't give up."

Western Kentucky applied pressure early and found the back of the net in the sixth minute of the game. Morgan Thomas received a pass from Lauren Carstens and sliced the ball into the lower left pocket of the goal to put the Lady Toppers ahead, 1-0. North Texas had its best opportunity two minutes later when senior Jamie Yates shot the ball just wide of the WKU goal. Freshman Kendall Juett had a breakaway after getting past WKU's last defender and dished the ball off to Yates who was racing towards goal.

The Mean Green continued to fight, outshooting the Lady Toppers by a margin of 21 to 8. Western Kentucky played a physical game, recording 17 fouls. WKU committed its final foul in its back third in the 82nd minute, which led to a North Texas corner kick. After North Texas pushed nine of its players in the box, Adams found the ball after it bounced around the 18-yard area.

Just a minute later, Radford headed in her third goal of the season.

North Texas continues its defense of the Sun Belt Conference title on Sunday, when the Mean Green plays Middle Tennessee at 1 pm. The Blue Raiders lost to Denver on Friday afternoon.
