MOBILE, ALABAMA (10/20/02) - Junior forward Marilyn Marin notched her fifth hat trick of the season and ninth of her career as the North Texas (11-4, 5-2) soccer team won their third straight game over South Alabama 4-2 at The Cage. Marin, who leads the nation in points, also broke her own school record for most points in a single season as she now sits with 64 points on the year. Marin, who now has 23 goals on the season, extended her point streak to 12 straight games and is just one goal off the school record for most goals in a single season, which she set in her freshman year at 24.
"This was a good win for us because South Alabama plays well at home," said North Texas Head Coach John Hedlund.
South Alabama scored the first two goals of the game from Julia Herman and then Heather Adams to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead in 25 minutes into the game. The Mean Green responded as sophomore Melinda Pina scored her eight goal of the season a the 30th minute mark of the first half to cut the lead to 2-1.
Marin then tied the game up at 2-2 with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute. Marin gave North Texas their first lead of the game as she netted her second goal of the match in the 67th minute. With less than two minutes to play Marin iced the game for the Mean Green with her third goal of the game. Marin finished with 12 shots on the afternoon.
Pina also extended her point streak to five games as she also picked up an assist on Marin's last goal to go along with her goal earlier in the match.
North Texas closes out their three game road trip with their final non-conference game of the season at SMU on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
