Mean Green Soccer Scores Late To Beat Red Wolves 2-0

DENTON, Texas (10-19-08) The Mean Green soccer team scored two goals in the last 20 minutes to defeat the Arkansas State Red Wolves 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the North Texas Soccer Field.

For North Texas (12-2-1, 6-1-1) it was their third straight win and has now won five of their past six contests. Arkansas State meanwhile dropped to 4-10-1, 1-6-1.

“I thought we came out in the second half and played more aggressive and made smarter decisions in front of their goal,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “To me that was the difference in the game.”

After 80 minutes of scoreless action, freshman forward Kelsey Perlman scored after she beat a defender and then had an open net after getting by goalie Megan Stoltzfus in front of the box. The goal was Perlman’s team-leading ninth of the season.

Eight minutes later Kendall Juett scored the clincher after she followed up a deflection and from one knee found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Perlman was credited with her team-leading fourth assist on the play.

“Kelsey’s goal was huge for us and Kendall came up big scoring the second goal to give us a cushion,” Hedlund said.”

Juett’s goal was the 26th of her career, tying her with Michelle Pratz for eight all-time in school history.

The shutout was the Mean Green’s sixth of the season and their second game in a row.

Overall North Texas outshot ASU 12-7 and had more opportunities to score but shots sailed high. Once again North Texas endured a physical battle with ASU picking up 16 fouls.

The Mean Green has three home games left in the regular season, the first of which is next Friday, October 24 against Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m.
