LAFAYETTE, LA (10/18/02) - Forward Marilyn Marin scored two goals and had an assist to lead the North Texas (10-4, 4-2) soccer team past Louisiana-Lafayette 3-1 at Cajun Field. The win is the 100th all-time victory in the soccer program's history.
"I was very proud of our team tonight. We played a very physical team and any time you can win on the road, especially in conference is always good," said North Texas Head Coach John Hedlund.
Louisiana-Lafayette jumped on top of the Mean Green in the early stages of the game with a goal three minutes into the action to take a 1-0 lead. Marin answered with a goal to tie things up in the 22nd minute. Marin's goal also extended her point streak to 11 straight games. Forward Melinda Pina netted her seventh goal of the season in the 39th minute to give the Mean Green a 2-1 lead heading into the half. Pina also has a point in four straight games for North Texas
Marin iced the game in the 68th minute with her second goal of the night, and her 20th of the season, to make it 3-1 North Texas. Marin, who leads the nation in points, ended the night with two goals and an assist to give her 54 points on the season which ties the school record for points in a season. That record was set by Marin in 2000 during her freshman season.
North Texas has now won two in a row and looks to make it three straight on Sunday afternoon when they visit South Alabama.
