Defense Helps Propel Mean Green Over UALR, 1-0

DENTON, Texas (10-17-08) Coupled by Veronica Ayala’s third goal of the season along with a sturdy defense the Mean Green defeated UALR 1-0 Friday evening at the North Texas Soccer Field.

All season long the Mean Green (11-2-1, 5-1-1) has relied on their defense and their consistency on that end continues to pay dividends. North Texas allowed only five shots compared to 20 of their own. It was the team’s fifth shutout of the season and Mandy Hall’s seventh of her career.

The lone goal came in the 30th minute when after a penalty was committed by UALR, Kelli Lunsford took a set shot that fell in front of the net and was kicked in by Ayala. For Lunsford it was her 17th assist of her career, putting her in sole possession of seventh place all-time in North Texas history.

North Texas had at least another handful of opportunities in front of the net by the shots sailed wide or high.

UALR (6-9-1, 2-5) had their best chance to score late in the contest when forward Christina Veasley fired a shot that was deflected and trickled past Hall but was able to recover in time to make the save and prevent the game-tying goal.

North Texas came into the evening sitting in fourth place in a tightly contested Sun Belt Conference and will remain there after the trio of Denver, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky all won Friday evening.

The encouraging news for the Mean Green is that they will play all three of those opponents in the final three games of the regular season at North Texas.

The Mean Green will look for the weekend sweep on Sunday when they host Arkansas State (4-8-1, 1-4-1) at 1 p.m. The Red Wolves are coming off a 2-0 loss at Denver Friday night.
