DENTON (10/17/04) - Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan broke the school-record for shutouts in a career as the North Texas women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Middle Tennessee at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
Buchanan made three saves on the afternoon to record her second consecutive shutout and the 13th of her career. The junior is also third all-time in saves with 164.
The Mean Green (10-4-1, 3-1-1) out shot the Blue Raiders (9-4-1, 3-1-1) by a 20-10 margin, and nearly nabbed the game winner in the 87th minute when a controversial corner kick goal was called back for goaltender interference.
"I thought we were the better team today," said Mean Green head coach John Hedlund. "We had a few shots bounce off the post and their goalie made some great saves, but we should have won the game."
Sophomore Kristen Campbell nearly ended the game with a 25-yard blast that pinged off the cross bar in the final minute of the first overtime period. Senior Elaine Bacchus nearly did the same when her 30-yard floating shot was tipped over the goal in the second overtime.
The match was a physical one for both teams, as the Blue Raiders racked up 20 fouls and the Mean Green committed 12.
The tie puts the Mean Green in the middle of a log jam atop the Sun Belt soccer standings, below Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama. The Mean Green travels to both teams next weekend to battle for the conference lead.
