North Texas Soccer Topples Western Kentucky

DENTON (10/15/04) - The North Texas women's soccer team netted a trio of first half goals while cruising to a 4-0 victory over Western Kentucky at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

Freshman Heather Hutyra struck first for the Mean Green (10-4, 3-1) with her fifth goal of the season, giving North Texas the lead in the seventh minute of the game. But just one minute later, freshman Jamie Yates' 10 yard blast put the Mean Green up by two.

The Mean Green found the net again when sophomore Kristen Campbell lofted a shot over the Western Kentucky (7-6, 2-2) goalkeeper in the 28th minute.

"I told the girls before the game that if they come out early and play well, they can beat any team in the conference," said Mean Green head coach John Hedlund. "It reminded me a lot of the Baylor game. This is one of the best games they have played all year."

The Mean Green put the nail in the coffin in the 48th minute when senior Elaine Bacchus found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

North Texas peppered the Western Kentucky goal throughout the game, registering 21 shots and earning seven corner kicks.

But, it wasn't just an offensive show for the Mean Green. The North Texas defense, led by senior Caree Ridenour, held the Lady Toppers to just five shots on the night.

Junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan also rose to the occasion, making four saves while earning her fifth shutout of the year.

With 12 career shutouts, and five regular season games remaining on the schedule, Buchanan is only one away from the passing school's all-time mark.

North Texas returns to Sun Belt action against Middle Tennessee at the Mean Green Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m.
