Lunsford Delivers Game Winner In 2-1 OT Win At Troy

TROY, Alabama (10/12/08) Kelli Lunsford scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in overtime to help lead the Mean Green to a 2-1 overtime victory at Troy Sunday afternoon.

North Texas (10-2-1, 4-1-1) wrapped up their last game on the road this season by bouncing back from a tie against South Alabama on Friday. Overall the Mean Green went 3-1-1 away from North Texas in 2008.

Lunsford, who had been held without a goal dating back to the ETSU contest on Sept. 12, came through when it mattered most Sunday afternoon. First she gave NT a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a penalty kick, beating Troy’s Ashley Branham. Then with the game time in overtime Lunsford scored on another penalty kick inside the box to send NT back home with their 10th win of the season.

“I thought we were very effective with our possession game throughout the match and once again we outshot our opponent (15-6),” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “We just have to do a better job of finishing our chances.”

Troy (6-7-2, 1-5) scored their lone goal in the 34th minute on a Bridgett Duke goal off a set piece.

The Mean Green now has five games remaining in the regular season, all of which will be at North Texas, the first of which will be Oct. 17 vs. UALR at 7 p.m.
