DENTON, Texas (10/10/09) - The Mean Green soccer team closed out their home season in winning fashion Sunday afternoon by defeating Troy 2-0 at the North Texas Soccer Field. Forward Michelle Young continued her sensational freshman campaign with two goals, giving her a team-leading eight on the season.
"I feel good that we took care of business this weekend and finished with another outstanding record at home this year (8-1)," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "Now we need to focus our attention on several road games."
For North Texas (9-4-1, 5-0-1) it was another dominant day on the defensive side of the ball, registering their fifth shutout in the last six games. Junior goalkeeper Mandy Hall collected three saves in route to her seventh shutout of the season. She is now tied with Kandice Ellis for second all-time in school history with 15 career shutouts.
The Mean Green also outshot the Trojans 19-7 and 12-3 shots on goal.
Young scored her first goal of the afternoon only 11 minutes in on a shot from the left corner of the box that bounced hard off goalkeeper Ashley Branham and in. Young's eight goal of the season came in the 85th minute when she received a beautiful assist from Kendall Juett for an easy chip in.
North Texas will now hit the hardest part of their schedule with five games remaining on the road. That journey will begin next Friday when they travel to UALR followed by a match with Arkansas State.
