DENTON, Texas (10/05/08) The North Texas soccer team survived a scare by defeating the FIU Golden Panthers 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the North Texas Soccer Field.
Thanks in part to Julie Lackey’s third goal of the season and superb play from goalkeeper Mandy Hall (6 saves), the Mean Green soccer team found a way to overcome an afternoon in which they were outshot (12-4) for the first time all season.
“Our offense seemed to be out of rhythm all day and nothing really worked,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “Thankfully our defense came to play today and secured the win.”
The Mean Green (9-2, 3-1) also appeared to catch a break late in the second half when junior midfielder Kendall Juett when down clutching her leg after colliding with a FIU player fighting for a loose ball. Luckily the injury did not appear to be too serious as Juett re-entered the game minutes later and finished the contest.
North Texas’ lone goal came in the 24th minute when Lackey shot a corner kick that took a favorable bounce and up and over FIU’s Melanie Raimo. Since scoring two goals against Louisiana-Monroe, Lackey has started the past two games and has proven to give her team an offensive spark.
Florida International (0-10-1, 0-3-1) had a chance to tie the game late in the second half but Maria Gualdron's shot hit the post and bounced out of the box.
The shutout from Hall was her fourth of the season and sixth of her career. She is three shutouts away from moving into a three-way tie for fourth place all-time in North Texas history along with Amy Smyser and Adria Costanzo.
North Texas will be back in action on Oct. 10 at South Alabama, followed by a trip to Troy on Oct. 12. Those games will mark the final road games for the Mean Green all season.
