Balanced Attack Leads North Texas Past FIU 4-2

MIAMI, Fla. (10/5/07) Four different players scored goals as the North Texas women’s soccer team won an intense and physical game against Florida International 4-2 to remain perfect in conference play from University Park. The game featured 33 fouls and three yellow cards but the Mean Green (9-2, 3-0) came from behind to pick up its third straight win.


“Its always good to win on the road and with our lineup being so depleted because of injuries we stepped up when we had to,” said North Texas coach John Hedlund.


FIU (2-5-1, 0-3) scored first in the match in the 11th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Claudia Cardenas got behind the Mean Green defense on the right side and beat keeper Kandice Ellis to the left corner.


Eight minutes later North Texas answered when freshman Janaye Woods tallied her eighth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1. Woods scored off a rebound in front of the Golden Panther net.


Lauren Weller notched her second career goal that gave the Mean Green a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute of play. Brittany Cleveland scored her ninth goal of the season in the 65th minute of play making it 3-1 North Texas. Veronica Ayala put the game away for good in the 71st minute with her third goal of the season to make it 4-1.


North Texas outshot FIU 14-8. Goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made two saves on the night to pick up the win.


The Mean Green returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a road game at Florida Atlantic.
