BOCA RATON, Florida (10/02/09) - The Mean Green soccer team earned their first road victory of the season Friday evening with a 2-0 shutout against the Florida Atlantic Owls in Boca Raton, Florida. For North Texas it was their third straight shutout and fifth of the season. The Mean Green is also now riding a season-high three game win streak.
"It was a nice win and a good way to start out the weekend," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "FAU is never an easy place to play so it took a total team effort to get the win tonight."
North Texas jumped out in front 1-0 in the 28th minute when they received an offensive spark from one of their defenders. Off a corner kick from Julie Lackey, senior defender Lauren Shockey headed a ball past the outreached arms of FAU goalkeeper Ashley Parrinello and in for only her second career goal.
The last goal Shockey scored came in 2007, which was also a game-winner in a contest against Troy.
The Mean Green would tack on another goal late in the contest in the 84th minute on Michelle Young's team-leading sixth goal of the season. The freshman forward dribbled the ball to the right corner of the box before delivering a successful shot in the upper left corner of goal to seal the victory.
North Texas outshot their opponents once again by a wide margin (16-4) and in corner kicks (6-0). Junior goalkeeper Mandy Hall picked up her fifth shutout of the season and only had to make two saves.
The Mean Green will look to make it four straight wins this Sunday when they travel to Miami to take on the FIU Golden Panthers. That game is scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m. (CT).
