DENTON (9/30/05) - The North Texas soccer team begins defense of its Sun Belt title with two conference games this weekend, beginning with a matchup against Troy on Friday night at 7 pm at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
The Mean Green has met Troy only once its is history, but that game is still in the record books as the largest victory in school history. North Texas defeated Troy,22-0, in 1997 in a game that saw the Mean Green post school records for shots, goals, and had five players record hat tricks in the game.
On Sunday, the Mean Green faces off with South Alabama. North Texas has won seven straight games against the Jaguars and is 2-0 at home against South Alabama. Both Troy and South Alabama are off to 2-0 starts to begin Sun Belt Conference play.
North Texas is a perfect 8-0-1 in conference openers and 5-0 in the Sun Belt Conference since joining the league in 2000. The Mean Green is 2-0 to begin conference play at home in the SBC. North Texas has outscored its SBC opponents to begin conference play 19-3 in five games. The Mean Green has started 2-0 in the Sun Belt conference each season since 2000.
With a win over Troy, the Mean Green can complete the month of September without a loss for the first time in school history. North Texas is a perfect 4-0-2 this month and since the program’s inception in 1995, the Mean Green are 62-17-4 in September.
A closer look at the numbers being put up by North Texas shows how the Mean Green has rebounded from an 0-2 start. North Texas has outscored its opponents 22-4 during the current seven-game stretch, notched three shutouts, and outshot its opponents 144-80. Individually, Heather Hutyra has scored nine goals and had 19 points in the last seven games. Hutyra has already notched a career high with 19 points this season through just nine games.
