Mean Green Cruises Past Golden Panthers 5-1

DENTON, Tex. (9/29/06) Three second half goals in a span of five minutes gave the North Texas (7-2-2, 3-0) women’s soccer team the spark it needed en route to a 5-1 win over Florida International (2-7, 0-3) at the North Texas Soccer Field. The win extends the Mean Green’s unbeaten streak at home to 19 games and its overall streak to six.

Junior Heather Hutyra notched her first multi-goal game of the season and seventh of her career with two goals on the night.

Junior midfielder Dani Slavonic started the scoring off for the Mean Green with a flick of the foot in the 25th minute of play. Slavonic deflected the ball off a free kick from K.D. Waters past FIU goalkeeper Madeline Gannon to give the Mean Green a 1-0 lead.

North Texas carried the 1-0 lead into the break until the second half explosion.

Julie Radford made it 2-0 North Texas in the 52nd minute of play when she scored off a loose ball in the box. Two minutes later Hutyra beat two FIU defenders and scored from the left side of the box to make it 3-0 Mean Green.

Kristen Campbell poured in the fourth goal of the night for North Texas just 80 seconds later off a feed from Kelli Lunsford.

Hutyra put an exclamation point on the night with her second goal and sixth of the season in the 77th minute. Hutyra rifled a shot off a free kick from 25 yards out that found the top side of the net.

Junior Kandice Ellis made seven saves on the night and was relieved in the final eight minutes of play by freshman Melanie Peterson who saw her first action of the year in goal.

North Texas returns to action at home on Sunday, October 1 against Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.
