LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (9/29/04) Sophomore forward Kristen Campbell scored 33 seconds into the game and the North Texas (6-3, 1-0) women’s soccer team went on to shutout Arkansas-Little Rock (1-7-1, 0-1) in the Sun Belt Conference opener 2-0 from the Burns Park Soccer Complex.
The victory by North Texas ends a brief two-game losing streak and gives the Mean Green its third road win of the season.
Campbell’s goal was the first of the season for her and came off an assist from senior defender Krista Georgas. The assist was also the first point of the season for Georgas.
The score remained 1-0 North Texas until senior forward Melinda Pina scored an insurance goal in the 55th minute of play off a feed from Richelle Magalhaes.
The goal by Pina was the third of the season and 44th of her career leaving her one shy of tying Christy Johnson for second on the all-time list for goals scored at North Texas.
The Mean Green dominated play as they out shot the Trojans 23-5. Freshman forward Heather Hutyra fired a career-high seven shots on net. Forward Jamie Yates and Campbell notched four shots on goal apiece as UALR goalkeeper Marsha Stewart made 13 saves on the night.
Junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made three saves on the night to pick up her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Buchanan is now tied for the second most shutouts in a career at North Texas history.
North Texas returns to action Friday night as they continue Sun Belt Conference play at Arkansas State.
