MONROE, Louisiana (9/28/08) The Mean Green soccer team was unable to overcome a hat-trick performance from Louisiana-Monroe’s Tiffany Bombard as the Warhawks defeated the Mean Green 3-2 Sunday afternoon, ending NT’s four-game win streak.
North Texas (7-2, 1-1) tried to stage a comeback in the second half with two goals coming from freshman midfielder Julie Lackey, however Bombard proved to be the difference.
“It’s a very disappointing loss, especially considering all the missed chances we had in front of their goal,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “But give Monroe credit, they played hard and deserved the win.”
The Warhawks (4-5, 1-1) jumped on the Mean Green early when Bombard scored her first goal of the day in the 19th minute, beating Mandy Hall to the far post. Then just two minutes before the half, Bombard took a pass from Tubbs that went in between defenders and Bombard beat Hall one-on-one to give ULM a 2-0 halftime lead.
North Texas got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute when Gennifer Hurst found Lackey for her first goal. Then later in the 76th minute Katy Booth earned her first assist of the season by finding Lackey towards the near post for the last goal of the contest. The two goals were Lackey’s firsts of her career.
The next contest for the Mean Green will be Friday, October 3 at home against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m.
