DENTON, Texas (9/27/09) - Having struggled much of the season to put the ball in the net, the Mean Green soccer team took out their frustration by scoring a season-high four goals in a 4-0 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Sunday at the North Texas Soccer Field.
Freshman forward Michelle Young had her second multi-scoring game of the season with two goals and freshman midfielder Ellen Scarfone connected on her second goal of the weekend. Sophomore forward Kelsey Perlman also got into the scoring act with her second goal of the season after not having scored in her previous seven games.
The four goals were the most scored by a Mean Green team since they won 4-1 in a match against East Tennessee State last season on Sept. 9.
"Our team goal was to be 2-0 at the end of the weekend which we achieved," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "It was especially nice to see the offense match our strong defensive play today."
The only scoring action in the first half came when Young gave the Mean Green the lead only 10 minutes into the game, scoring her fourth goal of the season on an open-field assist from freshman Scarfone. On the play ULM goalkeeper Alex Holland was injured and was replaced by Mallory George.
North Texas (6-4, 2-0) stormed out of halftime and five minutes in Perlman was able to get behind the Warhawks back line and had an easy chip shot goal after George fell down trying to recover to make it 2-0 Mean Green.
Not two minutes later Young was credited with her second goal of the game on a shot that bounced the wrong direction off an ULM defender and past George to increase the lead to 3-0. Later on in the 80th minute Scarfone scored her second career goal of her young career on a putback right in front of the net.
The Warhawks (1-7-2, 0-2) were held to only four shots the entire game and were outshot by the Mean Green 16-4. North Texas goalkeeper Mandy Hall picked up her second straight shutout and the 12th of her career.
North Texas will next travel to Florida next weekend to take on Florida-Atlantic (Friday) and Florida-International (Sunday).
