Mean Green Wins Conference Opener Over ULL, 3-1

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (9/26/08) It’s official, the Mean Green soccer team is on a roll. Thanks in part to two second half goals from Veronica Ayala, her first two of the season, North Texas ran their win streak to four games with a Sun Belt Conference opening 3-1 win at Louisiana-Lafayette Friday evening.

“This game was really back and forth in the first half,” North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. “Fortunately we were able to free up Veronica on the left side where she was able to knock two pass the keeper.”

After playing to a 1-1 first half tie the Mean Green (7-1, 1-0) came out the aggressors by outshooting the Ragin’ Cajuns 8-7. Ayala, a senior who had been held scoreless through the first seven games, put North Texas ahead for good in the 56th minute by beating goalkeeper Stephanie Weston. Ten minutes later Ayala sealed the victory by beating Weston to her left, completing an stellar night and giving North Texas a solid start to conference play.

North Texas scored the first goal of the game in the 26th minute when Brittany Cleveland found Kelsey Perlman for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The freshman forward from Allen High School has been sensational this season and now leads the team with 11 points.

ULL (2-6-1, 0-1) would tie the game right before halftime on Chelsea Balestra’s second goal of the season. The shot that snuck just inside the goal post was the first goal allowed by North Texas’ Mandy Hall in three games. She also recorded four saves and now holds a 7-1 record this season.

The Mean Green also improved their record to 12-0 all-time against the Ragin’ Cajuns and outshot ULL 14-11. North Texas has outshot their opponents in every game this season.

North Texas will now travel to Monroe to take on the Warhawks Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. After that contest the Mean Green plays seven of their last nine games at North Texas.
