DENTON (9/22/02) - North Texas (6-1) fought off blustery conditions to defeat the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 3-0 to extend their home winning streak to 13 straight wins. At 6-1 the Mean Green are also off to their best start since 1998.
"This was a good win for us. You can't ask for a better start of the season for us being 6-1 going into the conference season," said Head Coach John Hedlund. "We were able to get contributions from everyone today and that helped make a big difference."
Going into a stiff wind in the first half Jessica Koschman scored her first goal of the season on a loose ball in front of the Tulsa net. The Golden Hurricane out shot North Texas in the first half 11-5 but goalkeeper Erin Johnson was able to keep Tulsa from getting on the board. In the second half North Texas seized control of the game on two goals just two minutes apart. Alyssa Carrier scored her third goal of the year in the 60th minute to make it 2-0 and then two minutes later freshman Jessica Hennessey drilled her third goal of the season from 25 yards out in the left side of the net to make it 3-0.
Marilyn Marin was held off the scoreboard but she did extend her scoring streak to four straight games with an assist on Carrier's goal. Johnson picked up her third win of the season making three saves on the afternoon.
North Texas begins a four-game road trip and defense of their Sun Belt Conference Championship on September 27 against Arkansas State.
