Holden Named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 19, 2016

DENTON - With the North Texas soccer team down, 1-0, in its conference opener, the Mean Green needed someone to step up. Senior forward Rachel Holden did just that, scoring two goals to lead North Texas to a 2-1 victory against Rice on Sunday.

For her efforts, she was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this season and the fifth time in her career.

"It's a well-deserved honor," North Texas head coach John Hedlund said. "Rachel scored two big goals against Rice and has been a force in our offense."

Down 1-0, Holden headed in the equalizer off a long throw-in from Marchelle Davis. She then put away a ball sent into the box by Taylor Torres in the 46th minute that proved to be the gamewinner.

With her two goals, Holden increased her season total to seven, which leads the team, and ranks second in the conference and 18th nationally. She also leads the team with 16 points, which ranks second in C-USA and 24th nationally.

Holden moved into sole possession of seventh place in the North Texas records book with 35 career goals; into sole possession of 10th place in career points with 78; and into sole possession of fifth place with 14 career game-winning goals.

North Texas soccer hosts two conference games this week. The Mean Green play Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., then face Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m.
