DENTON (9/19/03)-- The one-two punch of junior forward Melinda Pina and senior forward Marilyn Marin overpowered Drury with five goals and 14 points to lead the North Texas (5-2) women's soccer team past the Panthers 5-1 at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
Pina, who now has nine goals on the season, collected her second career hat trick with three goals and two assists while Marin added two goals and two assists on the night. The Mean Green started quick as Marin scored her first goal of the night just 31 seconds into the contest. The Panther had an answer just two minutes later as Jody Palazzolo tied the game up at 1-1 scoring on a loose ball in the box.
Seven minutes later Pina scored the first of three consecutive goals for her with a rocket shot from 20 yards out to give the Mean Green a 2-1 lead in the 10th minute of the first half. Pina notched her second goal of the night in the 50th minute and finished off the natural hat trick in the 77th minute with a goal on a corner kick to make the score 4-1 North Texas. Marin ended the scoring with her second of the night and fifth of the season just two minutes later to give the Mean Green a 5-1 lead.
Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made 10 saves on the night and picked up her fifth win of the season. Marin and Pina combined for 14 shots on goal, 14 points, and all five North Texas goals on the night. The victory by North Texas gives the Mean Green a 31-2-2 record at home since the 1999 season.
North Texas is back in action at home on Sunday September 21 against Nicholls State. The Mean Green will look to extend their winning streak to a season-high three games.
