DENTON (9/17/04) - Richelle Magalhaes' game-winning shot found the back of the net in the 86th minute to give North Texas a 2-1 win over the Baylor Bears Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
The win for the Mean Green (5-1) marks the program's first victory over Baylor (2-3-1), and extends the team's record home winning streak to 16 games in a row.
"This game had everything in it. It was very fast paced, and both teams left everything on the field," said Mean Green head coach John Hedlund. "I give all the credit to the kids, because they played hard and they played like a team."
North Texas opened the match with an early goal when Kristen Campbell's cross found Melinda Pina on the six yard box in the game's third minute. Pina one-timed the shot past Bear goalkeeper Ashley Holder for her second goal of the season and 43rd of her career.
Pina is only two goals away from moving into second place on the all-time goals list for North Texas.
The Bears rebounded in the 35th minute on a goal from Tiffany Boshers, but Magalhaes' first goal of the season would prove the game winner.
The Mean Green out shot the Bears 10-8 in the most physical contest either team had seen all season. The teams combined for 31 fouls in the game, the Bears accounting for 20.
Mean Green goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made two saves on the night for her fifth win of the year.
North Texas will return to action on Sept. 24 when the Mean Green hosts the #21 SMU Mustangs.
