Mean Green Looks To Get Back On Track With Trip To Ohio


DENTON, Texas (9/19/09) - After a weekend full of hi's and low's with a win over Baylor and a loss to Prairie View A&M, the Mean Green soccer team hits the road for only the second time this season when they travel to the state of Ohio. On Friday North Texas will play Ohio St. for the first time in school history at 7 p.m. (CT) followed with a match against Xavier Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).

Scouting Ohio St.
The 25th ranked Buckeyes (5-1-1) are currently riding a four-game win streak, which includes two impressive victories over then 14th ranked San Diego, USC and UNLV. Senior goalkeeper Lauren "Taz" Robertson leads the Big 10 with five shutouts and is second in the conference with a 0.55 goals against average.

In their last outing against Youngstown St. the Buckeyes won 6-0 and got a hat trick from sophomore forward Paige Maxwell, who leads the team with five goals. Ohio St. is also very good at home, compiling a record of 48-13-7 since 2003.

Scouting Xavier
The Musketeers have dropped their first six games this season and have been outscored 19-4 this season. Last weekend they suffered a 3-1 loss at Miami (OH) and a 4-0 defeat at Cincinnati. Xavier's opponents have outshot the Musketeers 116-32 this season.

Senior midfielder Brittany Green leads the team with two goals on 16 shots.

The Series Breakdown
Although Friday will mark the first time the Mean Green will go up against Ohio St., North Texas does have a short history against Xavier. Last season the Mean Green beat the Musketeers 1-0 in Denton on a Gennifer Hurst goal in the 38th minute. In that contest North Texas outshot Xavier 16-2.

Young But Talented
Freshman forward Michelle Young continues to open eyes with her strong play this season. The freshman from Mesquite, TX has been the team's best offensive player in 2009 and leads the team with three goals. She scored the team's only two goals this past weekend in the 2-0 victory over Baylor. Young (17) is second to only Kendall Juett (23) in shots.
