Soccer Shuts Out Lamar 2-0

DENTON, Texas (9/14/08) The Mean Green soccer team won their second straight home game this weekend, defeating Lamar 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a game that was moved from Beaumont to North Texas. Senior forward Brittany Cleveland scored her first goal of the season and North Texas (5-1) outshot the Cardinals by a staggering 28-4 margin.

The game’s first goal came from Kelsey Perlman in the 18th minute on a cross from Kelli Lunsford. For Perlman it was her third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with Kendall Juett and Lunsford. Perlman also had another goal later in the contest but it was wiped away due to an apparent offsides call.

Cleveland’s score came in the 67th minute when Veronica Ayala led her perfectly for an open shot that was drilled past Lamar’s Jessica Winters. For Cleveland, the goal felt like a long time coming.

“I’ve been waiting on that one for a while, I’ve been in a rut,” she said. “Hopefully now that I got the first one out of the way they’ll (goals) start coming.”

Despite the win, North Texas head coach John Hedlund was a tad disappointed in the fact that his team missed a lot of opportunities in front of the net.

“When you take 28 shots and nine on goal you’re always hoping to score more than the two we had today but I think the wind played a factor,” Hedlund said. “It seemed to frustrate our forwards all day.”

North Texas goalkeeper Mandy Hall saw little action at the net and did not record a save, although she did improve to 5-1.

Now the Mean Green will set sail on a four-game road trip that begins Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Baylor and then on Sunday they will travel to play Houston Baptist at 1 p.m.
