DENTON, Texas (9/12/09) - Amidst a continuous downpour and playing 12 hours after their previous game, the Mean Green soccer team suffered a 1-0 upset loss to the hands of the Prairie View A&M Panthers Saturday morning at the North Texas Soccer Field.
Angelica Diaz scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Mayra Castillo in the 77th minute, beating North Texas goalkeeper Mandy Hall for the game-winner. Prairie View goalkeeper Jessica Garcia came up big for Panthers with 15 saves, including a stop on Kendall Juett's potential game-tying goal with three minutes remaining.
North Texas had their chances to score, outshooting the Panthers 22-5 and 15-1 shots on goal. Perhaps the biggest missed opportunity of the game came in the second half when Kendall Juett was tackled in front of the net and North Texas awarded a penalty kick. The Mean Green chose sophomore forward Kelsey Perlman to take the shot and last season's leading goal scorer missed wide.
The Mean Green will look to get back in the win column next weekend when they travel to the state of Ohio for matches against Ohio St. (Friday) and Xavier (Sunday).
