Freshmen Score And Assist On All Three Goals In Draw With Indiana
Mean Green Draw With Hoosiers, 3-3
Sept. 10, 2017
DENTON --The North Texas soccer team fell 52 seconds shy of beating Indiana Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.
A late goal from the Hoosiers tied the game at three and sent it into overtime where the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
It is the Mean Green's first draw of the season.
"Tremendous effort from my team today," said head coach John Hedlund. "We feel a little snakebite with the last minute goal but Indiana is a very talented team with a lot of depth. But to have three freshmen score the goals today against an outstanding Big 10 team that just beat nationally ranked SMU says a lot about our program's future."
All three of North Texas' goals on Sunday were both scored and assisted by freshmen.
Sunday, freshman Logan Bruffett got the game going with her first goal of the season. It came in the 30th minute and gave North Texas a 1-0 lead. Bruffett scored after receiving an assist in the box from fellow freshman Berklee Peters.
It was Peters' first assist on the year but with her team-leading five goals it gives her 11 points on the season, which also leads the team and all C-USA players.
North Texas' one goal lead didn't last long, however.
Seven minutes later Indiana tied the game and then took a 2-1 lead right before halftime with another goal.
Similar to Friday's match versus Weber State, the Mean Green were going to need to find a comeback in them.
And it was the freshmen who ignited it.
In the 72nd minute, still trailing 2-1, freshman Ariel Diaz crossed a pass to her classmate Brooke Lampe who quickly triggered and found the back of the net. It was Lampe's second goal this season and tied the game.
The tie was quickly broken two minutes later when Diaz scored her second goal of the year.
"All of us freshmen have clicked really well as soon as we got here," Lampe said. "We've all bought in and you see it on the field. We have good chemistry together."
The Mean Green defended well from then on out, but a small lapse gave Indiana an opportunity to tie the match in the 89th minute and they didn't miss.
Both teams had a few more opportunities in overtime but neither could connect. And after the 20 minute overtime period the game ended in a draw.
"We played incredibly hard," Lampe said. "We'll get over that last second goal that they had and be ready and better for our next match. We're proud of how we played especially us freshmen."
North Texas returns to the Mean Green Soccer Stadium on Sunday Sept. 17 to host FIU in the C-USA season opener.
