SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (9/10/04) - Three second half goals fueled the North Texas women’s soccer team to a 4-1 win over the Drury Panthers as the Mean Green matched its best start in school history at 4-0. With the win North Texas has now matched the 4-0 start to begin the season they recorded in 1996 and 2002.
“This was a nice win for us tonight,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “We came out in the second half and really took control of the game. I thought that out young players were outstanding for us and really made the difference”.
True freshman Heather Hutyra notched the first multi-goal game of her career with two goals on the night. North Texas started the scoring off in the 23rd minute when senior Caree Ridenour scored her third goal in four games with a tally off a free kick.
Drury (1-4) tied the game up at 1-1 just before the half with a goal in the 41st minute from Tara Davis. The Mean Green answered eight minutes into the second half when junior Misty Cordon scored her third goal of the year from 10 yards out.
Hutyra iced the game for North Texas scoring her two goals just four minutes apart in the second half. Hutyra’s first goal came in the 66th minute off a shot 15 yards out from the box. She capped off her night with her second goal five yards out in the 70th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan picked up the win by making three saves on the night. Buchanan’s shutout streak ended at 187 minutes after the goal by the Panthers.
North Texas will be looking for the best start in school history at 5-0 on Sunday afternoon when they wrap up their two-game road trip with a battle against Southwest Missouri State.
