SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (9/12/04) - The North Texas women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 1-0 defeat against Southwest Missouri State. The Mean Green (4-1) was going after the best start in school history but had their four-game winning streak snapped.
“This was a tough game for us,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “We had our chances in the game but just could not finish. I thought their goalie made some tough saves and we just couldn’t get one past her”.
North Texas outshot the Bears 27-11 in the game but goalie Alexis Stormo made 12 saves to keep the Mean Green from scoring. The game’s only goal of the afternoon came in the 74th minute when forward Sarah Guenther scored to give Southwest Missouri State the 1-0 lead.
North Texas dominated play in the second half as they outshot the Bears 15-3 but could never get one past Stormo.
13 different players had shots on goal for North Texas lead by freshman forward Heather Hutyra with five shots. Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made the start in net and made three saves in the first half. Buchanan was relieved in net to start the second half by freshman Kandice Ellis who made one save but took the loss.
North Texas returns to action on Friday, September 17 at home against the Baylor Bears.
