The Mean Green Matches Its Best Start In School History

NATCHITOCHES, La. (9/9/07) Brittany Cleveland scored her second game-winning goal in as many games to lift the North Texas women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State at the Holiday Inn Classic. North Texas has matched its best start in school history at 4-0.

The Mean Green had five players named to the Holiday Express all-tournament team. Cleveland, Heather Hutyra, Kandice Ellis, Gennifer Hurst, and Janaye Woods all were named to the all-tournament team.

“It’s always nice when you can go on the road and get two wins,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “Brittany played well and we are looking forward to getting home and keeping up the momentum”.

North Texas started the scoring off in the 33rd minute when Heather Hutyra notched her second goal of the season. The goal is Hutyra’s 41st in her career and the 99th point in her career. Leading 1-0 at the break, North Texas let the Demons (2-2) tie the game up at 1-1 when Erin Hebert scored in the 49th minute.

Cleveland’s heroics came in the 79th minute when freshman Janaye Woods fed her a perfect pass for the goal. The Mean Green did not relinquish the 2-1 lead in the final 10 minutes of play. The goal is the sixth of the season for Cleveland, in only four games, and shatters her previous career high of five goals in a season.
