Mean Green Soccer Defeats Weber State Behind Peters' Two Goals
North Texas Comes From Behind To Win
Sept. 8, 2017
DENTON -- Freshman Berklee Peters picked up right where she left off for the Mean Green soccer team with a pair of goals Friday night.
North Texas (4-2) defeated Weber State (1-5) 3-1 at the Mean Green soccer complex after trailing 1-0 to start the match.
"We came out a little bit flat against a very good hard working Weber State team and unfortunately when you do that you find yourself down 1-0," said head coach John Hedlund. "I feel the changes we made from there really seemed to work for us, the pressure we were able to apply on their backline and goalkeeper with 32 shots on goal really helped us create the three goals we needed for the win against a very good team."
After falling behind 1-0 in the early stages of the game, North Texas made a mass substitution, which included inserting new goalie Brooke Bradley.
Bradley entered the game shortly after the Weber State goal and she ended the match with five saves in the 70 minutes of playing time.
"I've played plenty of games before so I knew I could do this," Bradley said. "But I also had my family and teammates support, which helped a lot."
From that point on the Mean Green maintained more of the possessions and found themselves with many more opportunities. North Texas outshot the Wildcats 32 to 13 on the night.
Finally, midway through the first half they broke through when Peters scored by sneaking her shot past the goalie. Peters played a career-high 84 minutes and took four shots.
"I feel great now and i'm playing with a lot of confidence and I think that really helped tonight," Peters said.
In the second half, Peters and the Mean Green continued to put heavy pressure on Weber State. Peters, who scored a hat trick in North Texas' previous match, gave the team a commanding two-goal lead as she netted her second goal of Friday with a quick shot in the box.
Peters, who made her first career start Friday night, has now scored five goals in the last two matches and leads the team in goals and points.
"Throughout this whole week my coaches have been telling me to be aggressive, Peters said. "Tonight I was just trying to play my hardest and not give up and give everything I had on the field."
