NATCHITOCHES, La. (9/7/07) Junior Brittany Cleveland exploded for four goals as the North Texas women’s soccer team scored early and often in its 8-0 rout of Lamar (0-3) in the first game of the Holiday Inn Classic. Cleveland’s four goals are most goals scored by a Mean Green player since Marilyn Marin notched four goals of her own on Sept. 26, 2003.
North Texas is perfect on the year at 3-0, its best start since 2004, and can match the best start in school history with a win on Sunday against Northwestern State.
Along with Cleveland’s big night, freshman Janaye Woods had two goals, two assists, and six points.
It didn’t take long for North Texas to find the back of the net as Cleveland notched her first goal of the game in the 9th minute with a goal off a corner kick from Kendall Juett. Woods scored the next two goals for North Texas in the 10th and 18th minute of play.
Cleveland notched her second goal of the game in the 22nd minute, this time on a header, off a cross from Juett for her second assist of the night.
Christie Stewart made it 5-0 North Texas in the 38th minute of play with her first goal of the season. The second half started much like the first, with two more goals by Cleveland. She collected the hat trick, the second of her career, in the 52nd minute and then capped off her night with a fourth goal in the 58th minute.
Senior Heather Hutyra, battling an ankle injury, scored her first goal of the season and the final one of the night for North Texas in the 88th minute of play. The goal by Hutyra is the 40th of her career.
Amanda Hall and Kandice Ellis combined for the shutout in goal as North Texas outshot Lamar 36-5.
North Texas stays on the road to face the host of the Holiday Inn Classic, Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
